The things to see and do on this page are a few of our favourites. They’re all on mainland Argyll or short ferry trip away. We’ve not included suggestions that need a longer ferry trip as they tend to need a long day out and lots of travelling time.
Inveraray Castle – access to the wider castle grounds and the walk up to Dun Na Cuaiche are free at any time. There is a charge to look around the castle itself and the immediate gardens.
Auchindrain township museum – an insight into life in a typical highland community
Kilmartin museum and Glen – prehistoric standing stones, cairns and rock carvings. You can also include Carnasserie Castle, Dunadd Fort and the Crinan Canal to make a day out.
Oban – the “sea food capital” of the west coast. There are also good places to eat out in Inveraray, Tarbert, Tayvallich and at the Oyster Bar near Cairndow.
Boat trips out to the Corryveckan whirlpool with Venture West or a day trip to Jura on the Jura passenger Ferry.
Whisky distilleries in Campbeltown and Oban – Springbank in Campbeltown is our favourite.
